Edwardian Postcard, Dunoon

The punk-black Firth.
A single ketch cruising,
mizzenmast abaft the mainmast.
Then the Waverley, punching its steam,
punctuates the air with smoke signals.
Clothes, the colour of bladderwrack,
loiter on the pier’s timber planks
beside the tiled, plumed pavilion.
And Mary, standing back,
bronze Fury of the Firth,
her unaltered gaze, blazing,
beacon for a distant lover.
